Unity ODBC Help - Introduction

General

This Help manual has been written to cover ALL jdeDirect and erpDirect ODBC driver installation options.  Unless otherwise specifically stated the guide refers to a Single User (SU) download and installation.

However, the Multi User (MU) installation is also discussed fully and is clearly marked as MU where it is different and of significance in the installation. In general the ODBC driver download and installation 'process' is the same for a Single User installation or a Multi-User installation; the difference is in the Licensing and where the applications can be installed.

The single user version may NOT be installed on windows server computers and a Multi-User installation cannot be installed on a Single User machine.  The Single User version is a windows desktop version for which you purchase a license for each desktop computer on which you wish to install jdeDirect.

A Single User License is for a single user but you may have any number of non-concurrent licenses. Multi User version is a windows server version for which you license each server computer on which you wish to install the Unity ODBC driver.  For each server, you must purchase a concurrent user pack starting at 5 concurrent users and incrementing in additions of 5.  This type of license typically serves applications such as Crystal Enterprise, Cognos, Hyperion, Citrix, Web Servers, SQL reporting services etc,

Therefore, a user Company may have 10 single user licenses for a development team and then a 250 multi-User concurrent license for up to 250 concurrent users.

The following table summarises all the installation options available in this guide:  You can short cut to the relevant installation section of the guide by taking the options required

Gateway Service: Must be installed on server machine before Thin Client installation.  Database and User authentication dependent on Service Pack level installed.

Common Download Functionality

The first section following the introduction covers the common aspects of the download process and are shown once only.  Topics covered are:

Start Download & Installation - Common

This starts at the Unity Solutions Home web site and details the creation of a New Unity Account, viewing the download options available, downloading a .zip file of the selected driver through to  accepting License conditions and the set up conditions entered. This section ends at the point that the download process changes as a result of the initial driver selection.

Software Licensing & Activation - Common

Once the selected driver has been downloaded the Licensing and activation section is common for all download options.  This section covers Licensing and Activation.

Software Licensing & Activation - Control Panel Entry

It is possible to license/re-license your downloaded driver.  This section goes through the Licensing and Activation process via the control panel.

My Unity Solutions Account Details

There is a further brief description of the Customer Account details for both SU and MU functions.

Standalone Installation Guide Details

The Standalone install is a unique occurrence and unlike any of the following OneWorld or World installations.  This section covers the Standalone installation which only works if no other Fat Client, Thin Client or pass through installations exist on the installing PC.

OneWorld Installation Guide Details

There are four separate ODBC download options within the OneWorld part of this guide.  Select the installation that you require and follow the designated path.

Fat Client

The main requirement for the Fat Client installation is that you have a OneWorld/E1 Fat Client already installed on your PC or server. It should be noted that the Fat Client installation is different depending on which version of JD Edwards is installed.  Follow the guide for Pre Service Pack 22 or Post Service Pack 22 depending on which is installed in your Company.

Thin Client

The Thin Client installation is different and requires that NO OneWorld Fat Client exists and that a Gateway machine exists somewhere on the network for the Thin Client machines to point at.

Gateway Machine

Before loading the ODBC driver to the Thin Client PC a gateway machine must exist with the Gateway Service installed.  Again there is a difference in the installation process depending on what level of Service Pack is installed.  Follow the guide for Pre Service Pack 22 or Post Service Pack 22 depending on which is installed in your Company.

Client Machine

The client machine installation and prerequisites are discussed in detail.  The installation process is the same irrespective of the Service Pack installed.

Pass Through

Pass through is a particular condition of ODBC OneWorld installation with the database User Id and password OneWorld authentication switched OFF. The installation process is the same irrespective of the Service Pack installed.

World Installation Guide

The jdeDirect ODBC World downloads are designed to operate with JD Edwards World Software.  This section of the Guide covers in detail all the requirements for the ODBC driver download to your iSeries (AS/400).

DSN Configurations

The Data Source Administrator (DSN) set up is a key part of the successful download and setup of the ODBC drivers.  The majority of the setup is fully automated at installation but if changes are required this section of the guide details all functions and methods of access.

jdeDirect Control Panel Details

Again the Control Panel is a key setup requirement in particular your Licensing status and individual driver controls.  This is where 'Logging' is switched on (and OFF) if you have a problem and the Unity Help desk asks you to switch on logging.

Other Technical Reference Details

This section covers further Technical Reference details.   It is not pre-requisite reading but available for those interested.

Links to Additional User Guides

We have added links to other guides and help manuals that may be of use.

We have also added a link to our Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) section on the web site.  If you have a 'problem' this may supply the solution?

How To Use The Driver

You have downloaded the required driver. This section covers the connection methodology required to be undertaken before your connection to Crystal Reports (or other product) can be used.

erpDirect ODBC RUL Installation

Restricted User License (RUL) installation of ODBC drivers for World for Crystal Reports (One single User) and Crystal Enterprise (One concurrent User) applications from Oracle is covered here.  The installation process is very similar to the jdeDirect World installation.  Only the different parts of the installation process are discussed in detail. e.g. Licensing, Client Access and DSN configuration.
